As parents, we often find ourselves enchanted—and sometimes utterly bewildered—by the things our children say. This phenomenon affects everyone, regardless of culture, religion, race, or background. Every parent can relate to those moments of surprise, dismay, and sometimes mortification sparked by a child’s words. What is going on in those little minds? How could they express thoughts so profound, humorous, or often downright confusing?
Tai, my youngest, constantly reminds me that children possess a magical curiosity. Her inquisitive nature and quick-witted comments keep me on my toes by highlighting just how uniquely imaginative and unpredictable kids can be. One particular incident is etched in my mind. I purchased a gorgeous blue and white dress for her to wear to a special school event.
When Tai first saw the dress, her delight was palpable. She admired how it swayed with her every movement as she twirled around in it. She loved the dress and was delighted to wear it. But this admiration didn’t last long. Just a few months later, Tai surprised me with her fashion perspective when the occasion arose to wear the dress a second time. She looked at me with those dark, hazel, innocent, and wise eyes of hers and declared, “This dress is a little last season!”

Those seven words left me utterly speechless. Here was my kindergartner, a little girl who should only be concerned with finger painting, ribbons, tutus, and nap time, suddenly operating her world on adult senses of fashion trends and seasons.
How could she possibly already understand the concept of fashion cycle and seasonal wear? Yet, she delivered the comment with such confidence and poise that it made me question everything. Was I out of touch? Did I mistakenly dress her in something passé?
One might think this was just a comment about a dress. But to me, her insight showcased her extraordinary ability to absorb information from her surroundings. From conversations overheard on playgrounds and in daily life, children are absorbing everything. They take their limited experiences, sprinkle in the many nuances of adult conversations, and articulate them in ways that can leave us both stunned and amused.
Such moments force us to reconsider our understanding of childhood. Children’s minds are like sponges, soaking up data from the world around them, often leading to moments of unexpected wisdom. They help us reflect on what we take for granted—the concepts of fashion, relevance, and even societal norms. In a world that often feels overwhelming for adults, our children’s fresh perspectives remind us of the beauty of simplicity and the importance of staying attuned to the present.

Tai’s innocent yet astute observation about her dress is just another reminder that wonder often lies in the unlikeliest of places. The next time your child utters something that leaves you baffled or chuckling, take a moment to embrace their perspective. Continue to marvel at their astonishing insights. Who knows, in those candid moments of parenthood, you might pick up on a thing or two about accepting gracefully and navigating your own “seasons” of life.
